During the Vietnam War, straight-laced Claude Bukowski (John Savage) from Oklahoma, arrives in New York City to see the sights before he has to enter the military. He meets a group of hippies [George Berger (Treat Williams), Jeannie Ryan (Annie Golden), Hud (Dorsey Wright), and Woof (Don Dacus)] who show him the time of his life. He even gets to have a brief romance when he falls for Sheila Franklin (Beverly D'Angelo), a New York socialite.
